Job summary

Job description

Toptal is looking for a senior full-stack engineer to build user-facing applications that give field engineers visibility and control over large-scale industrial power systems.

This is a hands-on role spanning frontend and backend development, working on software that interfaces directly with physical hardware in the field.

About the Role

This role is responsible for building embedded applications deployed to the field alongside industrial hardware systems. The engineer will develop end-to-end UI features that interface with control software, enabling field engineers to commission and service physical equipment.

The work requires close collaboration with field engineers, firmware engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, and adjacent software teams.

Tasks and Deliverables

• Develop UI features end-to-end, from frontend views to backend APIs
• Drive features through all stages of development — from requirements gathering to rollout and user feedback collection
• Exercise independent UX judgment on less-defined design areas, given limited dedicated design support
• Potentially extend into core infrastructure and control services within the embedded stack
• Collaborate closely with product, design, end users, and adjacent engineering teams

Required Experience

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including production systems
• Senior-level experience with React or another SPA-based web framework
• Senior-level experience in Python, Go, gRPC, Protobuf, or industrial communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, CAN, etc.)
• Strong full-stack skill set, comfortable navigating both frontend and backend/"plumbing" layers
• Prior experience with industrial control systems (e.g., actuating contactors, controls for pumps/heaters) is a strong plus
• Highly collaborative, with strong user empathy, curiosity, and an ownership mindset
• Interest in energy storage, renewables, or industrial power systems is a plus
