Job summary

Neurotype Inc. is seeking a part-time full-stack engineer to advance our brain-based medical software tools. You will work across React Native, Python, and AWS on projects ranging from mobile apps to backend services, with an emphasis on accessibility and rigorous documentation.

The role supports 15-25 hours per week remotely within the United States, overlapping with Central Time. You will contribute autonomously, review scientific requirements, and ensure compliance in a regulated medical

Qualifications

  • A comfortable, effective full-stack engineer across React Native, Python, and AWS, who works fluently with AI tooling and checks its output rather than trusting it blindly
  • Able to work autonomously in concentrated blocks. You scope your own work from an issue tracker and a codebase, and you say so early when something is off
  • You understand why version control discipline, documentation, and traceability matter in medical device development
  • Curious about the science and clinical use behind what you're building. You want to know why a feature exists, not just what it should do

Responsibilities

  • Feature work: take a requested feature across mobile, web, or backend from a scoped requirement to something shipped, tested, and documented
  • Modernization: keep runtimes, frameworks, and mobile platform targets current, and ship the releases that go with them
  • Accessibility: build to WCAG 2.1 and verify it with real assistive technology. There are real users behind this, so it isn't a checkbox
  • Authentication and data protection: identity-provider work, PHI boundaries, and the access controls a regulated system needs
  • Infrastructure and CI: AWS defined as code, plus the build, test, and release automation around it
  • Documentation: leave every system better documented than you found it

Job description

Neurotype Inc. is a Minnesota-based medical device startup building brain-based assessment tools for addiction medicine, including NeuromarkR™ , an investigational EEG-based clinical decision support platform. We're NIH-funded and work in collaboration with university medical schools.

The Role

You would work across multiple funded projects and products, spanning the following and more: a digital therapeutic mobile app (React Native, TypeScript, REST API, AWS) delivering a guided behavioral-health program; a clinical decision support platform (Python/Django, PostgreSQL, React, AWS, Electron) for addiction treatment planning; and a brain-based biofeedback device (Python/Django backend, gamified UI) designed to address environmentally triggered craving.

Each of these systems has been piloted to some degree and is now being modernized into its next generation, shaped by features our users have asked for, work proposed in scientific projects, and updates required by regulatory bodies. On some projects you would be a second set of hands; on others, closer to a product owner. Our codebases were audited line by line recently and you get those documents on day one, so you inherit more real documentation than most projects hand over.

How We Decide What to Build

This is a science-driven role. What gets built, and in what order, comes out of a few things at once rather than a roadmap invented in a planning meeting:

  • The science: features trace back to the research behind these products and to what our studies are designed to measure. When a scientific aim shifts, the product shifts with it
  • Clinical and user need: the clinicians, researchers, and patients using these systems tell us directly what is missing or getting in the way
  • The bar for medical software: this is software people make care decisions with, so quality, traceability, and documentation are part of how it gets built rather than paperwork added at the end

You don't need a science background to do this well, but you should find that context interesting rather than an obstacle. Expect to read a study summary, ask what a measure is actually for, and sometimes say that a proposed feature won't hold up in clinical use. If you want requirements handed over fully specified with no discussion of why, this isn't the right role.

What You'll Own
  • Feature work: take a requested feature across mobile, web, or backend from a scoped requirement to something shipped, tested, and documented
  • Infrastructure and CI: AWS defined as code, plus the build, test, and release automation around it
  • Documentation: leave every system better documented than you found it
Who You Are
  • A comfortable, effective full-stack engineer across React Native, Python, and AWS, who works fluently with AI tooling and checks its output rather than trusting it blindly
  • Able to work autonomously in concentrated blocks. You scope your own work from an issue tracker and a codebase, and you say so early when something is off
  • You understand why version control discipline, documentation, and traceability matter in medical device development
  • Curious about the science and clinical use behind what you're building. You want to know why a feature exists, not just what it should do
Strongly preferred
  • A track record of shipping and maintaining mobile applications through the app-store release process
  • Accessibility experience, including testing with screen readers
  • Engineering in HIPAA or other privacy-sensitive contexts: data boundaries, access control, audit logging
  • Depth in modern authentication and authorization
  • Infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and the operational side of running what you build
Not required

You don't need a neuroscience or EEG background, regulatory credentials, or clinical training. The founder carries the scientific and regulatory lead, and our written conventions carry the process. We're looking for an engineer who wants to understand the domain, not one who already knows it.

Structure and Compensation
  • Part-time W-2 employment at 15-25 hrs/week. There is a path to more hours as funding milestones land, and we're transparent that role growth tracks new funding
  • The work is funded from more than one source, so time is tracked per project. Allocation shifts by phase and we schedule in contiguous blocks rather than daily fragments
  • A confidentiality agreement and HIPAA training are part of onboarding
  • Compensation is competitive and depends on experience
  • Remote within the US, with overlap with Central Time

Neurotype Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of the communities our work serves.
