Job summary

Berks Heim in Pennsylvania seeks a Maintenance Worker to perform skilled and routine maintenance on buildings, equipment, and grounds. This role may lead and instruct less experienced staff and may be on-call as needed.

Responsibilities include repairs in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry; general upkeep; custodial tasks; moving furniture; snow removal and lawn care; and supporting renovation projects. A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs skilled semi-skilled, and routine maintenance related tasks. Works in teams and independently with little supervision in the maintenance and repair of building, equipment, and grounds. This position may lead and instruct maintenance employees with lesser training and/or skills. May be required to serve in an on-call capacity. Employees in this class may be assigned varied tasks as needed.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not necessarily limited to:

• Assists in the general maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds that do not require a trades license.
• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance tasks on equipment such as, but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and grounds maintenance equipment.
• Assists in construction and renovation projects at Berks Heim, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and grounds maintenance.
• Performs custodial tasks.
• Assembles, repairs, maintains, and moves wall fixtures, furniture, desks, cabinets, tables, chairs, shelves, wheelchairs and related fittings and fixtures.
• Ability to operate snow removal equipment, including but not limited to snowplows, snow throwers, salters, and loaders
• Ability to operate lawn mowing equipment to maintain County property as needed.
• Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or G.E.D. certification from a recognized issuing agency.
• Completion of accredited trades training course at the apprentice level or the equivalent in related training and experience.
• Minimumtwo(2)ormoreyears'experienceasabuildingmaintenanceworker.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Valid state-issued driver’s license.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• General Knowledge of at least one trade (plumbing, electricity, carpentry, HVAC, etc.).
• Knowledge of the building trades terminology, tools, and equipment.
• Demonstrate initiative and ability to self-motivate.
• Ability to analyze problems.Ability to adhere to all County policies and procedures and Berks Heim SOP.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with the general public and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to utilize computer programs and software.
• Knowledge of the safe use of mechanical equipment.
• Knowledge of general maintenance principles and practices.
• Ability to consistently meet assigned deadlines.
• Ability to handle stress.
• Physical presence on-site is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Work involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
• Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Capable of repetitive pulling, pushing, kneeling, climbing, squatting, stooping, and bending for prolonged periods of time. Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Able to work extended shift(s) during an emergency.
• The incumbent must be able to operate County vehicles and equipment.
• Work may be performed at heights in excess of 15 feet from grade and involve the use of a ladder, scaffolding, and/or bucket trucks.
• Rooftop work may also be required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

• Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following safety precautions.
• Work involves exposure to unusual elements such as varying temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, small spaces, and loud noises.
