Required Qualifications:

• At least 21 years of age.
• Associate's Degree or two+ years of active military service with honorable discharge (degree required within 42 months if hired via military experience).
• Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
• Possess and maintain License to Carry Firearms.
• No felony convictions.
• No tattoos, body art, brands, or scarifications may be visible above the collar line, including on the face, neck, or head.
• Must currently reside/be willing to relocate within thirty (30) miles of the Town of Franklin; within 12 months of appointment (Town/City border to Franklin, as the crow flies).
• Preference may be given to candidates who meet certain additional qualifications (such as residency, U.S. Veterans, specialized training, or relevant experience). However, all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration.

Additional Requirements for Certified Applicants:

• Must be POST Certified.
• Must have completed the Full-Time MPTC Police Academy, or equivalent.
• Must pass an through background check, including driving record check, CORI background check.
• Pass a physical examination, including a drug screen.
• Pass a psychological evaluation.

Additional Requirements for Lateral Transfer Applicants:

Candidates applying as Lateral Transfers must meet all requirements for Certified applicants, as well as the additional qualifications listed below.

• Massachusetts Officer Status Required: Only applicants currently employed full-time as police officers in a Massachusetts police department are eligible for lateral transfer consideration.
• Out-of-State Applicants: Must hold current Full-Time Police Officer status, and be a full-time enforcement officer from any U.S. law enforcement agency in order to apply to the Department as a Lateral Transfer.

  • Out-of-state Lateral Transfer applicants are required to obtain an Advisory Letter from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) and upload it to their Supporting Documents folder before applying.

  • The Advisory Letter helps determine whether an applicant may qualify for a Massachusetts police academy exemption based on prior law enforcement training and experience. • National Decertification Index (NDI) Standing: A FT Lateral Transfer applicant must be certified and in good standings with the National Decertification Index (NDI).

Additional Qualifications

Duties & Responsibilities of a Franklin PD Patrol Officer:

• Upholding the law.

• Accurately document all activities in accordance with department policy.
• Patrol assigned areas to deter and address crime, traffic violations, and safety hazards while maintaining awareness of community conditions and high‑risk locations.
• Perform security checks.
• Assist with traffic control and special events.
• Engage in community policing efforts.

Throughout all duties, officers are expected to maintain readiness, operate issued equipment safely, communicate effectively, and provide courteous service to the public.

Salary & Compensation

Salary Range:

• $60,400 - $76,000 annually; plus:
  • Union contract incentives.
  • Education Incentive for associates (10%), bachelors (20%) and master (25%) degrees.
• Full benefits package to include available health, dental, life and disability insurance.
• Available Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA).
• 457 Deferred Compensation Plans (MA SMART or Nationwide).
• Education reimbursement for continuing education ($4,000 per year).

Collective Bargaining Agreement Highlights:

• Schedule - Patrol Division: 4 on 4 off; 10 hours.
• Full and part time specialty stipends.
• Paid Details: Details are scheduled in (4) four hour minimum blocks, increasing to (8) eight hours or longer, with pay rates at $70 / hour.
• Callback: Minimum (4) four hours.

Specialty Area Stipends:

• Full-Time ($250 / biweekly): Detective, Court Prosecutor, Community Service Officer.
• Part-Time ($100 / biweekly): Accident Reconstructionist, Computer Specialist, Armorer, Firearms Instructor, MDT Coordinator, Medical Equipment Coordinator, Domestic Violence Coordinator, Field Training Officer Coordinator, K-9, Motorcycle Officer, Public Information Officer / Social Media Officer, Training Officer.
• Tuition Reimbursement: Subject to appropriation up to $4,000 / fiscal year.
