Job description


  1. 1. Perform assigned duties within scope of authority and training, according to department operating practices and expectations.

  2. 2. Maintain a state of readiness for immediate emergency response; inspect, maintain, repair, and perform other technical tasks related to apparatus and equipment; perform pre-fire planning; and testing of fire hydrants and fire hoses.

  3. 3. Participate in cleaning and maintaining station facilities, living quarters, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained.

  4. 4. Participate in classes, drills, and training to maintain and upgrade physical fitness, firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical skills, and knowledge of service area characteristics and target hazards.

  5. 5. Respond to emergency calls related to fire suppression operations, search and rescue, and emergency medical services; provide appropriate services as required; prepare reports and work logs as assigned; and follow orders under stressful conditions.

  6. 6. Perform all duties related to fire rescue, including connecting and carrying fire hose, carrying, setting up, and climbing ladders, directing water and chemicals on burning structures, vegetation, vehicle, and other objects; and searching for trapped or injured people.

  7. 7. Perform emergency medical duties as an Emergency Medical Technician under medical direction; stabilize acutely ill or injured persons; complete patient reports and other documentation as required.

  8. 8. Participate in a variety of public education and fire prevention programs, including risk reduction activities, station tours, residential fire safety inspections, and demonstration of fire equipment and apparatus.

  9. 9. Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications


  • - Knowledge of fire behavior and suppression techniques, building construction and fire codes; hazardous materials awareness; light rescue techniques, and incident command systems.

  • - Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and operating under medical protocols.

  • - Knowledge of mechanical principles involved in the operation of fire apparatus and associated equipment.

  • - Knowledge of fire service hydraulics and water supply strategies and tactics.

  • - Knowledge of street locations, the nature and location of hazardous premises, principal buildings, hydrants, and alternate water sources.

  • - Ability to operate firefighting equipment; perform patient assessment and care; communicate effectively and take the initiative to guide self and others when needed.

  • - Ability to remain calm under pressure, working seamlessly with other responders and agencies, adapt to unpredictable situations, and apply safe, effective solutions.

  • - Ability to understand and act in accordance with department rules, policies and standard operating procedures and demonstrate skill in applying these toward specific situations.

  • - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • - Ability to understand and carry out both verbal and written directions in emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • - Ability to perform in a manner that protects the interests of the community and all members of BCESD 1.
