As a firefighter/apparatus operator, you will engage in:

Responsibilities
  • Emergency Response: Act swiftly and effectively to fire calls, disaster situations, and medical emergencies. This will include the response of Departmental apparatus.
  • Technical Training: Learn and master firefighting techniques, hazardous materials handling, and emergency medical care through rigorous study and training.
  • Life-Saving Work: Perform responsible and technical tasks to protect residents from fires, environmental hazards, and disasters, providing emergency medical treatment and conducting rescue operations.
  • Your responsibilities will include:
  • Fire Control and Extinguisher: Apply advanced techniques to manage and extinguish fires.
  • Medical Assistance: Deliver critical emergency medical care to the sick and injured.
  • Station Maintenance: Participate in the upkeep of equipment and station quarters to ensure readiness.
  • Public Interaction: Exhibit tact and courtesy when dealing with the public and those in distress, maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.
  • This role demands rapid response, strenuous physical exertion, and the ability to make independent judgments in high-pressure situations. Your performance will be evaluated based on your effectiveness in emergency responses and adherence to established procedures.

General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible, technical work in protecting residents from fire and environmental emergencies or disasters, rendering emergency treatment to the sick and injured, and responding to emergency rescue situations involving bodily injury or potential loss of life. Employees are subject to the usual hazards of fire-fighting and rescue work, including risk of exposure to hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens. Employees are responsible for station upkeep, apparatus readiness and can serve as an initial incident commander on an emergency scene. Employees will also be responsible for responding Departmental apparatus to calls for service both within the primary response area as well as automatic and mutual aid areas. Employee reports to a Fire Officer.

  • Operates fire apparatus responding to medical emergency calls as an emergency medical technician; performs necessary rescue work; and administers necessary emergency medical care.
  • Operates apparatus responding to non-emergency calls, such as requests to assist other emergency medical care providers in moving patients into transportation vehicles and assisting disabled persons in their homes when other assistance is inadequate.
  • Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in all areas related to fire fighting functions and meet Federal, State, and Local standards.
  • Actively participates in public fire and life safety education activities, hydrant maintenance, professional development reviews, and any other assigned duties.
  • Utilizes specialized hand and power tools in rescuing victims of fire, disaster and other emergencies.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation or defibrillation as necessary.
  • Maintains appropriate level of physical fitness for duty.
  • Participates in as a member of a company in pre-fire planning.
  • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet, file maintenance, and/or database programs to enter, store, and/or retrieve information.
