Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Software Engineer for the Games team in New York City. You will build frontend features with React and TypeScript, collaborate across teams to drive subscription growth, and contribute to Go/Node backend APIs on AWS. This hybrid NYC-based role reports to the Engineering Manager, Games CASH squad.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of full-time software engineering experience building and supporting user-facing features in large-scale web applications using TypeScript and React.
• Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web performance to deliver accessible, responsive interfaces.
• Experience with version control (Git, Bitbucket, etc.).
• Familiarity with server-side development (Node.js or Go) or willingness to learn.
• Experience collaborating with designers, product managers, and engineers to ship features.
• Ability to document technical decisions clearly in writing and conversation.

Responsibilities

• Develop and test entry points across NYT surfaces (web and mobile) using React, TypeScript, and modern HTML/CSS.
• Collaborate with partner teams to monetize games through subscriptions and optimize landing pages.
• Participate in full development lifecycle including design, implementation, review, testing, and release.
• Instrument features for observability and experimentation with analytics and product partners.
• Debug and resolve frontend and backend issues and improve architecture and tooling.
• Participate in on-call rotations and support mission-driven journalism.
