Job summary

The University of Florida’s ED-Distance Learning department seeks a Front-End Web Designer II to lead UX planning, interface design, and responsive front-end experiences within the College WordPress environment.

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with two years’ experience, or an Associate’s degree with four years’ experience.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WordPress customization.
  • Experience designing responsive interfaces with accessibility standards (WCAG AA).
  • Portfolio demonstrating user-centered design and information architecture.

Job description

The University of Florida’s ED-Distance Learning department is seeking a Front-End Web Designer (Web Designer II) to lead UX planning and digital interface design, support accessibility and usability improvements, and deliver responsive front-end experiences within the College WordPress environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead user experience planning and interface design for College websites and digital applications, including stakeholder discovery to identify user needs, project goals, content priorities, and functional requirements.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity interface designs to communicate design intent and support collaborative development.
  • Design responsive layouts and front-end experiences aligned with University branding standards, with a focus on accessibility, usability, and mobile-first design principles.
  • Evaluate and refine digital experiences through usability testing, user feedback, analytics, and iterative design improvements.
  • Maintain design systems, reusable interface components, and visual standards to support consistency across College digital properties.
  • Consult with faculty, program staff, and research teams on user experience, web design best practices, accessibility requirements, and digital communication strategies.
  • Develop documentation, design standards, and training materials that support consistent and accessible web content development across the College.
  • Serve as a resource for usability, visual hierarchy, content organization, and responsive design recommendations.
  • Design and implement pages in the College WordPress environment using child themes, page builders, and reusable content modules.
  • Collaborate with developers to translate visual designs into maintainable front-end experiences, ensuring browser compatibility, responsive behavior, and accessibility compliance.
  • Support content creators with guidance on page layouts, content hierarchy, visual presentation, and accessible content authoring practices.
  • Maintain proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WordPress customization techniques needed to implement and maintain high-quality web experiences.
  • Collaborate with faculty and interdisciplinary research teams on user interfaces that support research dissemination, grant-funded initiatives, data visualization, and digital engagement.
  • Research emerging web design trends, accessibility technologies, interaction patterns, and UX methodologies to recommend improvements to College digital experiences.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary project teams by developing scalable interface patterns and reusable design frameworks.
  • Partner with communications and marketing staff to evaluate website performance using analytics, usability testing, and user feedback.
  • Recommend and implement design improvements that enhance engagement, navigation, accessibility, and content discoverability while supporting strategic communication goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Operations, Director of E-Learning, Technology, and Communications, and the Dean and Senior Associate Dean of the College.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or an associate’s degree and four years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Web Design, User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Media, Graphic Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Portfolio demonstrating thoughtful digital product design, including user-centered design processes, visual communication, responsive layouts, accessibility considerations, and information architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing responsive websites within WordPress CMS environments.
  • Experience creating wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and design systems using Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar tools.
  • Strong visual design skills, including typography, layout, spacing, color systems, and information hierarchy.
  • Experience conducting usability testing and applying WCAG AA accessibility standards.
  • Minimum three years of professional experience designing websites or digital experiences.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WordPress customization sufficient to implement and maintain front-end designs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with developers, communications professionals, faculty, and project stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of responsive design principles, user-centered design methodologies, and contemporary web trends.
