Job summary

Hometown-Grocers, Inc. in Merrill, WI is seeking a Produce Clerk I. This part-time, hourly role reports to the Produce Department Manager and focuses on delivering friendly customer service while maintaining fresh produce standards.

You will assist guests, stock displays, rotate stock using FIFO, take orders, answer phones, document temperatures, and help manage the cooler. Regular attendance and teamwork with produce associates are essential.

Qualifications

• Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with customers and all personnel.
• Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to handle a diverse crew in a highly stressful environment
• Complete understanding of all safety requirements and company safety policies
• Must possess the ability to apply on-the-job safety training to recognize and react to possible safety hazards on store premises. Also requires proper training and knowledge of the following equipment/procedures: slicers, proper lifting techniques, trash compactor, baler
• Knowledge of the retail food business, thorough knowledge of perishable department operations, merchandising skills, and must be able to make timely and effective decisions

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service to guests.
• Assist guests with finding items on or off the sales floor.
• Take orders and other special requests.
• Answer the telephone and assist callers using proper phone etiquette.
• Address guest concerns and resolve issues or escalate to the Produce Department Manager as needed.
• Fill all items on display and rotate stock using first in, first out (FIFO); follow display standards.
• Keep the sales floor clean and tidy; prevent spills.
• Maintain produce supplies (e.g., roll bags, twist ties).
• Take temperatures of items regularly and fill rotation sheets daily.
• Record shrink daily and maintain the Produce Cooler with proper rotation and cleanliness.
• Responsible for ordering some product (dips, spices, herbs, etc.).
• Attend regularly and provide adequate notice for absences.
