Position Summary

The role of the driver is to follow all the laws and regulations for safe operation of a vehicle over federal, state, and local highways and roads. Drivers will make prompt pickups and deliveries and always be professional and courteous to shippers, consignees, and customers while protecting the Company from claims and damages to shipments and property.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Transport and deliver freight over the road over long or short distances in a safe, efficient, timely and legal manner.
  • Hook and unhook trailers; secure freight and operate equipment in a safe and legal manner.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and maintain records required under state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Ensure that all operations are in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects/repairs to Company personnel.
  • Valid Driver’s License or Commercial Driver’s License required.
  • Must have had a driver’s license for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • Meet all standards (legal, medical, safety, etc.) required by the DOT and pass required drug/alcohol test, MVR and background check.
  • Able to drive for extended periods of time, be available for round-the-clock trips and remain alert while driving for periods of up to 10 hours.
  • Able to squat, crouch, and reach as needed to handle freight and able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab numerous times each day.
  • Able to access and manually release the fifth wheel lever and tandem pins which requires horizontal pulling with a force of 100 pounds at a height of 44 inches and pulling with a force of 100 pounds at a height of 38 inches.
  • Able to occasionally carry or move freight weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • For flatbeds: able to handle, install and remove special equipment weighing up to 110 pounds including chains, straps, tarps, tiedowns, etc.
  • Must be able to work in severe weather conditions – both heat and cold.
  • Load and unload trailers and trucks and perform lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying freight.
  • Operate assigned vehicles safely and efficiently in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Drive vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) under 26,000 lbs.
  • Transport pallet goods and packages from a place of origin to assigned destination.
  • Pick-up loads and organizes goods in an orderly, logical manner.
  • Ensure contents are properly secured inside of the truck to prevent breakage or damage.
  • Handle and unload goods safely and efficiently from a truck at selected destinations.
  • Obtain signatures or warehouse scans to confirm and complete deliveries with clients.
  • Assist warehouse staff and customers with loading and unloading processes.
  • Map delivery routes to ensure timely deliveries.
  • Stay in constant communication with the offices about traffic reports, delays, etc. to dispatch as needed.
  • Confirm that contents and piece count of each shipment load matches the waybill or manifest document.
  • Protect the company from claims by notating Overages, Shortages and Damages.
  • Perform inspections of your vehicle prior to and following each trip.
  • Notify managers of any major maintenance or delivery issues encountered.
  • Maintain detailed driving and delivery log, as applicable.
  • Obey all applicable traffic laws and drive according to the weather/road conditions.
  • Comply with DOT regulations.
  • Represent the Company and the trucking industry in a competent and professional manner.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • One year previous tractor/trailer driving experience (unless applying as a Student Driver).
  • Knowledge of all applicable DOT Regulations and Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
