Job Description Summary
The Freight Handler loads, unloads, and transports freight within or near the terminal, yard, or work site.
Critical Job Functions
- Reads work orders or follows oral instructions to determine materials or containers to be moved.
- Loads and unloads freight and counts onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves.
- Loads freight into vehicles and installs blocking, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
- Transports freight from storage dock area or trailers to designated areas.
- Secures lifting attachments to freight and conveys load to move it to the destination.
- Attaches identifying tags or labels to freight or marks information on cases, bales, pallets, and other shipping packages.
- Stacks or assembles freight into bundles and bands bundles together on pallets.
- Cleans work area, machines, and equipment to assist machine operators.
- Operates industrial trucks or electric hoists to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; or 1-3 months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence.
- Ability to communicate internally with operations and dock supervisors.
- Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Forklift driver qualification.
- Hazardous Material Training.
- Good judgment in problem-solving and dealing with various personalities in a limited-structure environment.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

- Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing, walking, handling, reaching, talking, and hearing.
- Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and smelling.
- Regularly lift/move up to 25 lbs, frequently up to 80 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required include color, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Work Environment:
- Frequent exposure to moving vehicles, outdoor weather, and vibrations.
- Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, high precarious places, and extreme temperatures.
- Moderate to high noise levels.

Compensation
- Estimated at $19.00/hour.
