Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking candidates for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee to learn inspection, repair, and maintenance of freight cars. This hands-on program combines classroom instruction with field training across shop and yard environments.

Trainees will perform welding and fabrication tasks, operate heavy equipment, and adhere to FRA/AAR standards. The role requires physical labor, outdoor work in all weather, and union membership within 60 days of establishing seniority.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Outdoor work in all weather conditions and heavy physical labor expected.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with safety and operating rules.
• Perform welding and cutting operations (SMAW and FCAW in 2F, 3F, and 4F positions).
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• May need to obtain CDL for operation of Locomotive Service truck.
• Straighten, fabricate, and replace steel parts (grab irons, ladders, sill steps).
• Remove and replace defective components including wheels, couplers, brake equipment, and air brake valves.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Document car components, destinations, repairs, and releases in computer systems.
• Wear required PPE and follow safety rules to prevent accidents.
• Complete annual safety training and pass safety examinations.
