Job summary

Union Pacific Corporation invites applications for a Freight Car Repair Apprentice in North Platte, NE. The role is a comprehensive three-year training program to inspect, repair, and rebuild freight cars through hands-on tasks and rotations.

You will perform inspections, maintenance, component repair, and learn safe operating procedures while contributing to on-time railroad service in a dynamic, safety-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Basic mathematical skills are required.
• Valid driver's license is mandatory.
• Good verbal and written communication is essential.
• Ability to read and understand instructions and bulletins.
• Candidates must complete an English assessment before interviews.

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough inspections for defects and damages.
• Perform maintenance tasks including air brake tests and pre-trip inspections.
• Repair or replace components on freight cars and rolling stock.
• Remove and replace faulty parts such as trucks, shoes, coupler assemblies.
• Prepare surfaces for painting and fabrication.
• Operate shop tools and equipment safely.
• Communicate technical information clearly to teammates and supervisors.
• Maintain positive working relationships and resolve issues.
• Ensure compliance with railroad rules and FRA guidelines.
• Perform additional duties as required.
