Job summary

Union Pacific Corporation in North Platte, NE is seeking an apprentice for a comprehensive three-year Freight Car Repair program. You will learn inspection, repair, and rebuilding of freight cars, performing scheduled and on-demand maintenance, and replacing defective components on rolling stock.

You will work under supervision to gain hands-on skills, conduct safety checks, and grow with a team focused on reliability and safety.

Qualifications

• Basic mathematical skills.
• Proficient verbal and written communication to convey information to coworkers and supervisors.
• Experience reading and understanding instructions (operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and regulatory documents).

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough inspections to identify defects, wear, and damages from derailments or collisions.
• Carry out maintenance tasks including initial terminal air brake tests and pre-trip inspections.
• Repair structural components of rolling stock; fabricate, cut, or finish parts; rivet, bolt, or weld as needed.
• Remove and replace faulty components such as trucks, shoes, coupler assemblies, or air brake systems.
• Prepare surfaces for painting, welding, and fabrication by cleaning; ensure readiness.
• Operate tools and equipment safely, including torches, hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
• Communicate technical information verbally and in writing to coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
• Foster positive working relationships and resolve issues effectively.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety rules, FRA guidelines, and related regulations.
• Perform additional duties as required.
