Role Summary
Free People is seeking an Associate Buyer responsible for collaborating with the buyer to develop an exciting, timely product assortment for retail and direct businesses that meets or exceeds sales and profit goals.
Role Responsibilities
- Support daily operations within the designated buying area and develop partnerships with the buyer on all necessary tasks.
- Own the buying process for a specific product class within the buying area.
- Plan assortments conceptually to meet financial objectives.
- Delegate and direct the daily activities of assistants and provide team guidance.
- Prioritize tasks, balancing immediate and long-term business needs.
- Research and develop products based on marketplace trends.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners and team members to achieve goals.
- Work closely with planning to understand financial indicators and drive business decisions.
- Assist in determining the overall product mix, including market and private label products, to ensure customer focus.
- Support the buyer in placing purchases confidently.
- Learn from buying mistakes and apply lessons to future decisions.
- Proactively communicate opinions in merchant meetings and cross-functional discussions.
- Manage merchandise flow and monitor inventory levels.
- Enter, update, track, and organize purchase orders to ensure timely delivery.
- Communicate late deliveries to the buying team.
- Set up new vendors, providing routing guides and pre-ticketing info.
- Prioritize and respond urgently to requests from merchants and teams.
- Assist in proofreading catalog copy.
- Identify product photos on the web for reshooting to enhance sales.
Role Qualifications
- At least two years of experience in retail buying or a similar role.
- Strong partnership-building, listening, oral, and written communication skills.
- Excellent organization and prioritization abilities.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.
- Detail-oriented with creative thinking skills.
- Team player.
- Proficiency in Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
