Job summary

OpenAI Foundation seeks a founding grantmaker for its AI Model Safety program. You will turn frontier model safety expertise into a grant portfolio, identify critical gaps, and scale the field with the AI Resources team. Independence and strong domain fluency are essential.

You’ll manage grantmaking end to end, identify opportunities, and collaborate with researchers, institutions, and funders to accelerate safe AI development. The role is senior and mission-driven.

Qualifications

At least 3 years of AI safety experience, including hands-on research.
Fluency in AI model safety: evaluations, red-teaming, auditing, interpretability, control, and alignment research.
Independent judgment on frontier AI capabilities and risks.
Ownership of ambitious, loosely scoped projects.
Relentless prioritization and decision making.
Strong written communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities

Run the program's grantmaking end to end (sourcing through investigations to grantees).
Run grant investigations and make grant recommendations to the board.
Identify priority projects and founders, and help build new initiatives.
Route AI resources to safety grantees and help them absorb it productively.
Develop the program's strategy with the team lead and collaborators.
Build and maintain relationships across the safety ecosystem.
