Job summary

The OpenAI Foundation is seeking a founding grantmaker for the AI Model Safety program. You will lead end-to-end grantmaking across independent testing, standards, and foundational safety research, and help identify and build the field by recruiting founders and seeding new initiatives.

You will report to the Director of AI Resources and collaborate with the AI Resources team to drive safety-focused funding and impact.

Qualifications

At least 3 years of experience in AI safety, including hands-on research in model safety or evaluations.
Deep fluency in AI model safety: evaluations, red‑teaming, auditing, interpretability, control, and alignment research.
Ability to identify important projects and build initiatives; capable of seeding new endeavors.
Strong written communication; ability to articulate risk, uncertainties, and downsides clearly.
Highly mission-aligned with a focus on ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity.

Responsibilities

Run the program’s grantmaking across its domains from sourcing through investigation to fund grantees.
Conduct grant investigations and present recommendations to the board.
Identify and launch priority projects and organizations; recruit founders and seed new initiatives.
Coordinate with the AI Resources team to route AI resources to safety grantees.
Develop the program’s strategy with the team lead and map gaps in the ecosystem.
Build and maintain relationships with safety organizations, institutes, and industry players.
