Job summary

The OpenAI Foundation seeks a founding grantmaker for its AI Model Safety program. You will oversee end-to-end grantmaking, identify pivotal safety initiatives, and build new mechanisms to advance safe AI models.

You will report to the Director of AI Resources and collaborate with the AI Resources team to scale safety work across the field, while stewarding independence in early-stage development.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in AI safety, with hands-on research in model safety or evaluations.
• Fluency in frontier AI capabilities, safety practices, and risk assessment.
• Strong ability to identify key projects and founders to scale safety initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Run the program's grantmaking across its domains from sourcing to funding.
• Conduct grant investigations and present recommendations to the board.
• Identify and develop priority projects and founders to scale safety initiatives.
• Coordinate with the AI Resources team to route support to safety grantees.
• Develop the program strategy with leadership and align with ecosystem activity.
• Build relationships with safety organizations, institutes, academia, funders, and industry teams.
