About the Opportunity

We are hiring a Founding Backend Engineer for our client, a fast-growing, profitable AI technology startup transforming tax preparation and accounting through AI-powered automation.

The company has generated seven figures in revenue in less than one year, and its AI platform is already being used by 11 of the top 100 accounting firms in the United States.

This is an opportunity for a hands‑on engineer who thrives in early‑stage startup environments, enjoys building products from 0 to 1, and has experience developing scalable backend systems integrated with LLMs and AI agents.

You’ll work directly with the CTO and Head of Engineering, take ownership of critical engineering decisions, and help build and scale production‑ready AI products.

The role is primarily backend‑focused, with some frontend development responsibilities.

Must‑Have Requirements (Dealbreakers)

1. Early‑Stage Startup & 0-to-1 Experience (Critical)
   • Experience building products from 0 to 1 at venture‑backed startups (Seed to Series B), including Y Combinator‑backed companies.
   • Previous experience as a Founding Engineer or in a high‑ownership engineering role at an early‑stage startup.
   • Proven ability to work independently in fast‑paced environments with limited structure.
2. Strong Backend Engineering – Python & TypeScript (Critical)
   • Strong hands‑on experience developing production‑grade backend applications using Python.
   • Proficiency in TypeScript, preferably with experience across backend and frontend systems.
   • Experience designing scalable backend architectures, APIs, and core application infrastructure.
   • Ability to make independent technical and architectural decisions.
3. Production LLM & AI Agent Experience (Critical)
   • Hands‑on experience building and deploying LLM‑powered applications or AI agents into production.
   • Experience integrating LLM capabilities into traditional backend software systems.
   • Strong understanding of how AI‑powered features interact with existing application architectures.
   • Practical production engineering experience, rather than primarily academic or ML research experience.
4. End‑to‑End Engineering Ownership (Critical)
   • Demonstrated ownership of engineering projects from initial design through development, deployment, and iteration.
   • Ability to independently translate business requirements into working software.
   • Strong product‑building mindset with a focus on execution, speed, and quality.
5. Educational Background (Required)
   • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field from a Top 50 U.S. university.
   • Degrees in Mathematics or Physics are also considered, preferably with a strong academic record.
6. Experience & Work Authorization
   • 2-7 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally 2-6 years.
   • Must be based in the United States and authorized to work as a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder.
   • Visa sponsorship is not available.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain the backend infrastructure powering an AI‑driven tax automation platform.
• Develop and deploy production‑grade LLM workflows, AI agents, and OCR/document‑processing pipelines.
• Independently own backend architecture and technical implementation decisions.
• Build new features and products from concept through production deployment.
• Collaborate closely with the CTO, Head of Engineering, and product stakeholders.
• Translate customer feedback from leading accounting firms into scalable product functionality.
• Contribute to the platform’s next major product release, scheduled for early next year.
• Help expand the platform into additional AI‑powered accounting workflows, including auditing.
• Contribute to frontend development when required while maintaining a strong backend focus.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Founding Engineer or early engineering hire at a venture‑backed startup.
• Experience at a Y Combinator‑backed or Seed‑Series B startup.
• Experience developing document extraction systems, OCR workflows, or large‑scale data processing pipelines.
• Strong experience with Python and TypeScript across production applications.
• Experience building AI agents or LLM‑powered software used by paying customers.
• Independent side projects, launched products, or other examples of 0-to-1 engineering.
• Demonstrated ability to move quickly, solve complex technical problems, and deliver with minimal supervision.

• Engineers who have experimented with LLMs but have not deployed AI‑powered applications into production.
