Job summary

OpenAI Foundation in San Francisco is seeking a founding grantmaker for the AI Model Safety program to advance frontier model safety through grantmaking and strategic initiatives. You will define and fund safety research, standards, and independent evaluations.

You will identify key opportunities, recruit founders, and scale the field while partnering with the AI Resources team to deploy resources to grantees.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience in AI safety, including hands-on research in model safety or evaluations.
• Deep fluency in AI model safety: evaluations, red-teaming, auditing, interpretability, and alignment research.
• Ability to identify opportunities, build initiatives, and seed new organizations.
• Strong written communication and ability to produce transparent documents.
• Deeply mission-aligned with AGI benefits for humanity.

Responsibilities

• Run the program's grantmaking across its domains from sourcing through investigation to grantees.
• Run grant investigations and make grant recommendations to the board.
• Proactively identify important projects and founders and build new initiatives.
• Work with the AI Resources team to route AI resources to safety grantees.
• Develop the program's strategy with the team lead and assess ecosystem gaps.
• Build and maintain relationships across safety organizations, institutes, funders, and industry safety teams.
