Job summary

XPO is hiring a Forklift Operator for our Portsmouth, VA dock to efficiently load and unload freight using a forklift and pallet jack. You’ll work the 4pm–9pm afternoon shift and may cover other shifts as freight volumes require.

This role requires being 18+, basic math ability, and comfort on a non-climate-controlled dock. Pay ranges from $22.85 to $28.10 per hour with annual step progression and benefits for eligible hours.

Qualifications

• Must be available for multiple shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends) due to varying freight volumes.

Responsibilities

• Efficiently sort, handle, load and unload palletized and non-palletized freight.
• Operate forklift and pallet jack; use motorized and manual equipment as needed.
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies.
• Maintain safety by following company policies on the dock.
• Use handheld devices to scan and track shipments.
• Work on a dock that is not climate-controlled for extended periods.

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Able to do basic math calculations, with and without a calculator
• Available to work a variety of shifts due to varying freight volumes, including days, evenings, nights and weekends

Preferred qualifications:

• Dock or warehouse experience in the transportation industry
• Forklift experience in a freight or less-than-truckload (LTL) environment
• Experience loading and unloading trailers
• Strong attention to detail and desire to succeed

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $22.85 to $28.10 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set
• Afternoon Shift, Day/Hours: 4pm-9pm
• Competitive and comprehensive benefits options available for those scheduled to work 30 hours or more/week
• This is a Motor Carrier Act Exempt position

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Efficiently sort, handle, load and unload palletized and non-palletized freight
• Use appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including pallet jack and forklift
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies
• Work in a safe, efficient manner, adhering to company safety policies
• Use mobile handheld devices to scan and track shipments
• Work on a dock that is not climate-controlled for extended periods

Forklift Operators are required to:

• Lift freight and other objects of various shapes, sizes and weights (frequently up to 50 lbs. and occasionally greater than 70 lbs.)
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on a loading dock that is not climate-controlled and may be slippery
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel as necessary
