Job description

Job Description

This employee is responsible for operating fork trucks to move pallets and combos of product, as well as shuttling various supplies into and out of storage. The operation of the forklift and the opening and closing of loading bay and freight elevator doors to access loads require both sitting and standing postures throughout the day.

Physical Demands and Requirements of the Job
  • Bending: Occasional bending is required to raise counterweighted doors, along with shoulder flexion to pull them back down.
  • Lifting: Lifting counterweighted loading bay doors may be required to access some loads. Often, mule drivers or the person requesting a specific pallet of supplies will handle the door. Occasionally, the team member will be required to lift a pallet from a stack ranging from 0 to 72 inches high and set it on the floor. The pallet may weigh up to 33 pounds.
  • Pushing/Pulling: A sliding door leads from the meat storage coolers to the dry dock receiving bay. Another sliding door leads from the cut floor to the forklift service bay. These doors may need to be opened and closed by the forklift operator.
  • Reaching: Reaching up to 25 inches from the plane of the shoulder is required to perform this job.
  • Grasping: Whole-hand grips are used on lever knobs, the steering wheel, and door handles.
  • Standing: More than five minutes of stationary standing at one time is not required to perform this job.
  • Force: Rare exertions of force are required to perform this job.
Work Duties

Forklift operators move palletized loads, fork-fitted containers, or cardboard combos on plastic sheeting. A wide-forked forklift equipped with a scissor-armed vise bar grabs one side of the sheeting and pulls the combo off the pallet on which it was filled with meat and manifested. This requires a certain degree of operator finesse and may occasionally require the team member to step down, straighten and raise the edge of the plastic sheet by hand, and make a second grasping attempt with the forklift.
