Job summary

The Forestry Aide – Monterey District / Asilomar Sector in the Natural Resources program is a field-based role that involves manual labor to protect and maintain natural resources at Asilomar. You will work with an interdisciplinary team and may coordinate with volunteers, staff, and contractors on trail, boardwalk, fencing, and signage projects.

Responsibilities include invasive species removal, habitat restoration, species monitoring, and assisting with greenhouse and landscape tasks.

$21.60 - $26.71 per Hour

The reporting location for this position is Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds. This position will work under the supervision of the Asilomar Senior Park and Recreation Specialist (SPRS).
The Forestry Aide is a part of a natural resources crew and primarily performs manual labor to protect, enhance, restore, and maintain natural resources at Asilomar. Responsibilities include invasive plant removal by manual, mechanical, and chemical methods, restoration and greenhouse activities, survey and monitoring of plant and wildlife species, and installation and maintenance of trails, boardwalk, fencing, and signage. The Forestry Aide will frequently be expected to work independently on tasks once given necessary directions.
The Forestry Aide will also work alongside volunteer groups, work crews, concession employees, and contractors. The Forestry Aide will work with the public as a State Park representative and with an interdisciplinary team. Weekend, holiday, early morning, and evening shifts may be occasionally required. The Forestry Aide will wear approved uniform apparel which shall be in good condition at the start of the workday.
Applicants should have the following qualities: Be flexible, open minded, hardworking, able to establish and maintain effective working relationships; work well with the public as a State Park representative; and willing to do detailed and/or repetitive tasks.
This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Working Conditions

Work outdoors in various types of weather; working in unpleasant conditions (i.e. Rain/Hot/Cold weather). Sitting, standing, hiking, and carrying heavy loads will be required. Exposure to biohazards such as poison oak, ticks, rattle snakes, stinging nettle, etc. Working on steep and sometimes unstable terrains.
