Working Conditions

Successfully completes required training as condition of employment. Maintains the Arduous Fitness Standard in accordance with department policy. The incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). As such, Cal/OSHA requires that the incumbent be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment. May be subject to working nights, weekends, or holidays to complete duties.

Special Requirements


  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.


Within 6 months of appointment, incumbent is required to have a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Class A or B Commercial Driver License with a tank (N) endorsement and no restriction for air brakes or standard transmission. New hires that do not have the passenger (P) endorsement will be able to drive the required vehicles for the purpose of obtaining a passenger endorsement only when an employee with the proper endorsement is present. The P endorsement must be obtained by the end of the six (6) month probationary period.

Salary Range B - This range shall apply to incumbents in positions with direct responsibility for work supervision, on-the-job training, and work performance evaluation of at least 2 inmates, wards, or resident workers.


Heavy Equipment Mechanic (6834)


This classification is eligible for the following pay:


$5608 - $6723 Base Salary (paid every month)


$67,296 - $80,676 Annual Compensation (plus Fire Mission Pay)*


*Fire Mission Pay: Incumbents receive approximately 10% of base pay paid monthly when fire season is declared for the employee’s Unit.


In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other pay differentials.
