Description of Work

The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is an emergency response division composed of professionals providing forest protection, resource management, and environmental education to North Carolina residents and landowners through various programs. NCFS services all 100 counties in North Carolina.

This position involves maintaining and operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, hauling units, and others used in wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, prescribed burning, and forestation. Responsibilities include minor equipment repairs, assisting with major repairs, and possibly supporting educational and forest management activities. The role requires responding during emergencies like wildfires and natural disasters.

Additional duties include:

  1. Participating in incident management teams as assigned.
  2. Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday to Friday, with extended hours during fire danger or emergencies, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
  3. Overnight travel may be required. Residency requirements will be discussed during the interview.

Work will be based at: 700 Newsome Lane Denton, NC 27239

Official NCFS uniforms are provided. A 13-speed hauling unit driving evaluation and crawler proficiency evaluation will be conducted on the interview day.

Pre-employment mandatory drug testing is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers and excavators.
  • Ability to operate a truck tractor with a low boy trailer under various conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-starter, service-oriented, cooperative work attitude.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Management Preferences:

  • Skills in minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience and training in wildland firefighting.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED and two years of heavy equipment operation experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also qualify.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Completion of NC FFEO training within two years of hire.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or permit, with the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days.
  • Passing a drug screening and possessing a Medical Examiner's Certification (Medical Card).
