The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response division, providing forest protection, resource management, and environmental education across all 100 counties in North Carolina. This position involves maintaining and operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, hauling units, and others used in wildland fire suppression, presuppression, prescribed burning, and forestation. Responsibilities include minor equipment repairs, assisting with major repairs, and supporting various forest management activities. The role requires responding during emergencies like wildfires and natural disasters. Participation on incident management teams may be required.
Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday to Friday, with extended hours during fire danger periods including evenings, holidays, and weekends. Overnight travel is required. Residency requirements will be discussed during the interview. The duty station is located at 406 Airport Road, Manteo, NC 27954. Official uniforms are provided.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to operate heavy equipment, drive trucks with low boy trailers, work independently and as part of a team, and possess effective communication skills. Management prefers candidates skilled in minor repairs and with wildland firefighting experience. Education requirements include a high school diploma or GED and two years of heavy equipment operation experience. A valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License or Learner's Permit with the ability to obtain the license within 90 days is required. Completion of NC FFEO training within two years of hire is mandatory. Pre-employment drug testing and medical certification are required.
