Job summary

The State of Utah's Utah Public Health Laboratory in Taylorsville seeks a Forensic Toxicology Laboratory Technician. The role involves bench work, sample prep, and analysis of drugs using LC-MS/MS, GC/MS, and ELISA with emphasis on accuracy and timely reporting.

Full-time or part-time status; benefits eligible. On-site work, statewide travel may be required. Background check and drug test are standard requirements for this position.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tasks as part of a team across multiple work duties.
• Prepare blood and urine samples for drugs of abuse and prescribed drugs.
• Operate LC-MS/MS, GC/MS and related instrumentation.
• Manage evidence and records in the LIMS system.
• Respond to requests for_final toxicology reports and preliminary reports.

FT / PT Status – Full-Time

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-day Responsibilities Of This Position

• The Forensic Toxicology Laboratory Technician III will perform certain laboratory tasks as part of a team that shares and rotates in performing various work responsibilities such as:
• Bench Work in the Laboratory
• Blood and Urine Sample Preparation and analysis for Drugs of Abuse and Prescription Drugs using Immunoassay (ELISA),
• Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer and Time of Flight instrumentation
• Analysis of Carbon Monoxide using spectroscopy and Volatiles using Headspace Gas Chromatograph instrumentation
• Analysis of Vitreous Fluid using Chemistry analyzer
• Preparation of reagents and drug solutions
• Evidence Management
• Sample Accessioning and Return of cases submitted
• Evaluation of acceptance criteria for cases submitted
• Repackaging evidence and storage of samples for return to submitting agencies
• Generation of Discrepancy forms
• Returning and mailing cases back to agency after completion of casework
• Using Lab Information System (LIMS) to track casework progress and completion
• Discovery Request and Record Management
• Filing casework and maintaining records
• Archiving casework
• Records Custodian training
• Driver’s License Division Requests
• Fulfilling requests for Final Toxicology Report and/or Preliminary Report to appropriate agencies
• Answering phone calls and electronic mail and relaying messages to appropriate staff members
• Fulfilling Discovery Requests for case proceedings

Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications

• Familiarity with biological matrices clinical testing techniques
• Secondary education (bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field, at or near completion).

Preferred Or Trainable/on-the-job Qualifications

• Prior experience in a clinical or forensic lab environment
• Familiarity with clinical/toxicology lab reports and data
• Experience with forensic chain of custody
• Familiarity with instrumentations used at the laboratory such as GC/MS and LCMSMS systems.

Time Management Skills

• Works well in a team environment
• Ability to travel within the state
• Good communication skills
