Job summary

Knott Laboratory is seeking a licensed Mechanical Engineer (P.E.) to join our Premises Liability team in Nashville. This role involves investigating accidents in built environments, evaluating codes and standards, and developing clear, defensible technical opinions to support litigation.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in forensic engineering or related work, strong report writing, and the ability to manage multiple projects.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years in forensic engineering, accident investigation, or related work.
  • Experience with investigating accidents or failures in the built environment and writing technical/forensic reports.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, safety standards, and accessibility requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site inspections and field investigations related to premises liability incidents.
  • Evaluate building design, construction, and maintenance against applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Analyze physical evidence, photographs, and witness statements to determine cause and contributing factors.
  • Apply engineering principles to assess safety conditions and code compliance (e.g., ADA, IBC, local codes).
  • Prepare clear, concise, and defensible technical reports summarizing findings and opinions.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to support litigation and claims processes.
  • Provide expert witness testimony as needed (deposition and trial experience is a plus).
