Job summary

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is hiring four DNA Analyst/Criminalist positions in the Forensic Services - DNA Casework Department. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, integrity, and a basic understanding of scientific principles involved in DNA and Serology analysis.

As a Class III peace officer, you will conduct serological and DNA analyses, prepare written reports, provide expert testimony in courts, and maintain chain of custody for evidence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, forensic science or related area, or obtained within 90 days of posting.
• Credits in genetics, biochemistry, statistics, and molecular biology or related subjects providing basic understanding of forensic serology/DNA analysis.
• Ability to analyze evidence, interpret findings, and testify effectively in court.
• Must meet all requirements to obtain Class III law enforcement officer certification in South Carolina.
• Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in relevant testing categories and perform duties under limited supervision.

Responsibilities

• Conduct serological and DNA analyses on evidence with limited supervision.
• Provide written reports based on interpretation of analyses and expert testimony in federal, state, and local courts.
• Represent SLED in a professional manner and serve as a Class III officer.
• Maintain chain of custody and properly document case-related communications.
• Coordinate with other departments to prioritize analyses and ensure evidence is preserved.
• Participate in training sessions and provide trainings to others as directed.
• Be available for periodic 24-hour call related to DNA/Serology issues.
