Job summary

The City of New York's Crime Scene Unit, within the Detective Bureau, seeks a Criminalist to perform chemical, physical, and microscopic analyses on diverse evidence and to train in laboratory standards and quality control procedures.

Responsibilities include analyzing gunshot residue, accelerants, drugs, metals, prints, and other materials, assembling data, and preparing formal reports. Hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM.

Qualifications

• 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
• 2. For Assignment to Assignment Level I - B individuals must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science or analytic chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3. To Assignment Level II, one of: one year as Criminalist at Level I-B; or two total years of qualifying experience; or a combination totaling two years.
• 4. To Assignment Level III, two years as Criminalist at Level I-B/II or two additional years of qualifying experience totaling three years.
• 5. To Assignment Level IV, three years as Criminalist at Levels I-B, II, and/or III; or three additional years totaling four years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform chemical, physical, and microscopic analyses/examinations on a wide range of evidence (gunshot residue, accelerants, drugs, paints, fingerprints, etc.).
• Train in repairs, maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Work with proper laboratory standards and quality control procedures.
• Review books, journals, and technical manuals.
• Assemble data and prepare reports.

Bachelor's degree in criminalistics/forensic science/chemistry/biology/physics/molecular genetics/genetics/biochemistry/molecular biology/entomology/anthropology/ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field
