Job summary

New York City Police Department is seeking a Criminalist within the Crime Scene Unit to conduct chemical, physical, and microscopic analyses of diverse evidentiary materials and to support investigations through accurate documentation and reporting.

You will train in laboratory standards, quality control procedures, and report preparation while working 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Residency is not required for this civil service role.

Qualifications

• In addition to meeting the general qualification requirements, a degree in criminalistics/forensic science or related field is required.
• Experience in criminalistics or analytic chemistry is described for higher assignment levels.
• Strong ability to document and report scientific findings is essential.

Responsibilities

• Perform chemical, physical, and microscopic analyses on a wide range of evidence (gunshot residue, accelerants, drugs, prints, glass, etc.).
• Train in routine repairs and calibration of laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.
• Review books, journals, and technical manuals and assemble data for reports.
