Job summary

Berks Counseling Center is seeking a Forensic Certified Peer Recovery Specialist to join the integrated care team, mentoring incarcerated individuals inside Berks County Jail and aiding their transition back into the community. The role emphasizes recovery, planning, and connection to resources.

Candidates should have PCB Recovery Specialist certification, 2+ years in recovery if applicable, and a valid PA driver's license. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Qualifications

  • PCB Certified Recovery Specialist required.
  • CRS: Self-identified current or past consumer of substance abuse treatment with at least two years in recovery.
  • If you have dual substance use disorder, you will need to be at least 2 years in recovery.
  • Valid PA Driver's License and ability to drive to community locations.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week within agency hours (8am–8pm Mon–Thu, 8am–4pm Fri, with Saturdays when applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Active member of the integrated care team mentoring and supporting incarcerated individuals.
  • Identify treatment plan goals and action steps during incarceration and after transition.
  • Assess consumers' skills, strengths, and needs to support recovery.
  • Contribute to developing the treatment plan to promote recovery.
  • Assist with Personal Medicine, Power Statements, and Common Ground Health Report.
  • Help consumers overcome barriers to care and identify community supports.
  • Facilitate peer education groups in jail and in the community.

Responsibilities
  • As a Forensic Certified Peer Recovery Specialist you will be an active member of the integrated care team. You will use your own unique experiences to mentor, teach, and support incarcerated individuals with building skills and resources to facilitate individual recovery, while at Berks County Jail System and as they are transitioning back into the community.
  • Assist incarcerated individuals in identifying appropriate treatment plan goals and action steps, during their incarceration and when they transition back into the community.
  • Effectively assess consumers' skills, strengths, and needs that will support ongoing substance abuse recovery.
  • Develop and/or have input into the professional development of a treatment plan that will promote recovery.
  • Assist consumers in identifying Personal Medicine, writing Power Statements, and completion of the Common Ground Health Report.
  • Assist consumers in overcoming barriers to care.
  • Help identify resources and educate consumers about community social service supports that might be available.
  • Facilitate peer-oriented skill development and education groups that promote consumer progress in jail and community.
Requirements
  • A PCB Certified Recovery Specialist
  • CRS: Self-identified current or past consumer of substance abuse treatment services with at least two (2) years recovery.
  • If you have a dual substance use disorder, you will need to be at least 2 years in recovery.
  • A valid PA Driver's License and the ability to drive, travel, and provide community-oriented service.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week within agency hours of operation, which are 8am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 8am-4pm Friday with Saturday hours, when applicable.
Preferred candidates will .
  • Have a PCB Certified Peer Specialist certification.
  • If CPS: To attest mental health diagnosis and stage of recovery.
  • Be Bilingual: English/Spanish preferred.
  • Have knowledge of drug and alcohol support programs including 12 step programs, drug and alcohol disorders and treatment, principles used towards achieving recovery, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Have knowledge of or experience with trauma-informed approaches preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • SEEING: Must be able to see well enough to read reports and use computer.
  • COMMUNICATING: Must be able to communicate well enough to clients, vendors, and coworkers.
  • MOBILITY: Must have mobility to move about the jail, agency, and community.
  • LIFTING/PULLING/PUSHING: Must be able to lift up to 5 pounds.
  • OTHER: Must be able to write, type and use technology.

  • Receipt of original documentation and verification of relevant degrees, diplomas, certificates, or licensure.
  • Confirmation that you are not on the OIG Federal Healthcare Program Exclusion from Participation list. Should you appear on this list, Berks Counseling Center is prohibited from employing you.
