Job Duties

The Administrative Section of the Department of Forensic Science’s Northern Laboratory is seeking an individual to provide routine to moderately complex clerical and administrative support. Responsibilities include preparing and distributing various documents in an accurate and timely manner; performing computer data entry of case information; maintaining administrative files and office supplies and coordinating the distribution of mail and telephone messages, along with other general administrative duties.

Staff working in this area are asked to refrain from using or wearing scented products, including perfumes, colognes, scented lotions and other fragranced items. Some employees have sensitivities or allergies to fragrances and maintaining a scent free space helps ensure a safe and productive workplace.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience working in an administrative office, to include delivering a full range of administrative services:
    - Responding to and directing business-related telephone calls to the appropriate person
    - Preparing, compiling, and managing the flow of correspondence, documents, projects, and reports in an accurate and professional manner
    - Distributing and processing mail, packages, and routing official documents
    - Copying and faxing
    - Setting up and maintaining files in compliance with policies and procedures
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to prepare, format and proofread documents
  • Ability to coordinate and execute office functions independently with little supervision required
  • Ability to maintain effective and congenial working relationships with a variety of people in a team-based environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodations
Additional Considerations
  • Work experience with eVA (the Commonwealth’s electronic procurement system)
  • Work experience with high volume data entry and filing
  • Work experience typing scientific reports
  • Work experience using Ideagen document management system
  • Work experience using a computerized tracking system for storage and retrieval of information or data, i.e. LIMS system
  • Completion of a Filing and Records Management course
Background Investigation

Selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a background investigation to include a fingerprint-based criminal history check. Selected candidate(s) must provide a DNA sample via a buccal swab (saliva sample) and successfully pass a drug test. Reference checks will be conducted to include contact with current and previous supervisors.
