Essential Functions Summary:
Reports to the Chief Program Officer. Responsible for maintaining all required compliance standards and documentation for the School Nutrition Program, which includes compliance of all food service operations, and sanitation standards, with national, state, and city guidelines. Includes maintenance of sanitation records as well as records related to meals and portions served. Chair the Local Wellness Committee to maintain the agency's Local Wellness Policy. Oversees the operations of TryMe's Café, a culinary arts class in the agency's Therapeutic Day School, as well as other groups of student/youth learning in the kitchen.

This position must be able to effectively use both verbal and physical intervention skills with individuals six (6) through twenty-one (21) years of age. Essential Functions & Core Responsibilities:
- Ensure quality customer service that is trauma informed and aligned with the values of Lawrence Hall.
- As the agency's "Food Service Director", attend trainings and maintain records for all food service staff's training hours for compliance with both the agency and with the School Nutrition Program.
- Ensure all menus are compliant with current School Nutrition Program's nutritional guidelines and the Offer vs Serve requirements.
- Monitor to ensure meals are served in compliance with Offer vs Serve requirements and meet the portion control guidelines in compliance with the School Nutrition Program.
- Create monthly menus that are compliant with School Nutrition Program guidelines.
- Maintain documentation of menu items, nutritional value, recipe standards and ensure all production/services logs are compliant with School Nutrition Program guidelines.
- Chair the agency's Wellness Committee and maintain the Local Wellness Policy.
- Work with the agency Nurse to maintain a list of students/youth with food allergies and ensure safe meals are in place for those youth.
- Ensure that all School Nutrition Program required postings are maintained, posted and visible to students, including daily menu.
- Maintain sanitation standards in the kitchen area to comply with the City of Chicago Department of Public Health.
- Request two annual inspections with the City of Chicago Department of Public Health
- Oversee all janitorial and service/maintenance contracts in the food service department
- Manage food supply rotation kept in dry and refrigerated storage areas
- Order food to meet School Nutrition Program requirements and align with approved menus
- Maintain service and storage records in compliance with City of Chicago regulations and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) standards.
- Maintain the food service budget to support cost controls
- Inspect kitchens in Residential Units for cleanliness, food maintenance and storage, compliance with meal preparation according to menus and rotation of food as needed.
- Maintain the Food Service Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HAACP) plan in compliance with ISBE guidelines
- Facilitate TryMe's Café in support of the Therapeutic Day School. TryMe's Café- is a student run café and culinary arts class.
- Oversee learning opportunities for youth in the food service department
- Work closely with management to develop and implement strategic initiatives that further develop vocational learning opportunities through the food service department.
- Set a positive example for employees, is a role model.
- Maintain fidelity of trauma focused interventions and treatment modalities
- Hold regular (at least twice a month), documented supervision of supervisees.
- Plan and deliver training related to own area of expertise and needs of programs supervised
- Uses active and reflective listening skills and affirmations to demonstrate respect and empathy, avoiding negative and derogatory labels that foster disrespect
- Maintain confidentiality of employees, volunteers, and program participants to provide a safe environment
- Ability to work effectively with program participants and family members, employees and vendors in a culturally diverse environment to support healing and recovery
- Participates in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement activities as assigned
- Communicates regularly and professionally with other agency personnel and external vendors
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least two (2) years food services experience
- 2 years of experience with ISBE nutrition program regulations preferred
- At least two (2) years of supervision preferred
- Basic computer skills
- Current Food Services Sanitation (state and city) certification
- Knowledge of childhood trauma and prior experience working in settings with youth and families that have been exposed to trauma or experiencing traumatic stress preferred
- Knowledge of youth development, adolescent issues, positive youth development/strength based approach preferred
- No history of child abuse or neglect
- Ability to pass background and drug screen
Work Schedule:
The work schedule will vary depending on the needs of the Food Service operation. The first shift, Monday-Friday begins at 6:30am. The last shift, Monday-Friday, ends at 7pm. Some weekends may be required with advanced notice. The Food Service Supervisor is expected to be onsite 40 hours per week and provide periodic oversight and observation of all shifts.
Job Impact:
This position requires a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail to ensure compliance with all elements of the food service operation, and to maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen area. Effective and professional communication with all vendors associated with the food service operation is critical. This position requires trauma-informed communication with youth.
Work Environment:
The work is primarily indoors, in the food service area. There are extended hours standing, walking and lifting. The ability to safely lift 30 pounds or more is required. The position requires high levels of safety precaution is adhered to while working with hot or sharp materials and access to cleaning chemicals.
All employees are required to complete and maintain certifications in all trainings relevant to their role. This position specifically mandates completion of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) with restraint training. Subsequent recertification is required every six months. Successful completion of these trainings is essential, but equally important is the consistent application of these skills in daily work.
Compensation:
Compensation is determined by a set base salary for each position, with additional compensation considered based on relevant education and experience. This position has a compensation range from $46,000 to $56,000.
