Job Overview

Position: Food Service Worker II

Agency: Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)

Location: Mexia State Supported Living Center, 540 Chapin Drive, Mexia, TX

Shift: Day (May also work evenings, weekends, and holidays)

Travel: Up to 5%

Vehicle: Must be able to drive a state vehicle to deliver food to homes (if required)

Salary Range: $2,639.75 – $3,404.91 per month (Monthly)

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform moderately complex food service work in the Central Kitchen or satellite kitchen under general supervision.
  • Prepare, portion, distribute, and serve food for regular and therapeutic diets.
  • Sanitize equipment, work areas, dishes, utensils, pots, and pans.
  • Handle food in accordance with federal, state, and HACCP guidelines.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend work regularly and work assigned shifts; may work a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime per agency policy.
  • Complete required training per policy.
  • Assist in the preparation and portioning of food for special diets.
  • Prepare scheduled snacks and maintain snack supplies.
  • Participate in safe and sanitary food distribution.
  • Assist in serving food following procedures.
  • Follow board and federal HACCP guidelines for food handling.
  • Receive and deliver food and supplies from vendors.
  • Follow sanitation procedures for kitchen and related areas.
  • Observe safety procedures and practices.
  • Train or assist in training new food service employees.
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation if required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, storage standards, and sanitation regulations.
  • Skill in operating and sanitizing food service equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and serve food and clean dining areas per standards.
  • Basic math skills for cooking and preparation.
  • Good communication in English, both speaking and reading.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds and perform tasks that require bending, reaching, and extended standing/walking on hard floors.
  • Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions.
  • Ability to use senses (smell, taste, sight) appropriately.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and residents.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Background checks, fingerprint, drug screen, and registry checks (including CANRS, HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities). Random drug testing may apply.
  • Optional: 6 months experience in food service preferred; at least some experience or high school diploma/or equivalent sufficient for initial screening.
  • Minimum age 18; males 18-25 must register with Selective Service.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours.
  • Compliance with ADA accommodations is available.
