Job summary

Penn State recruits a Food Service Worker (HUB), Grade 9, to join the dining services team. Responsibilities include operating kitchen equipment, cleaning, stocking serving lines and returning items to the kitchen. The role expects up to 3 months of effective experience and a basic ability to perform simple calculations and follow instructions.

Work schedule is 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with Saturdays and Sundays off, and the position is covered under the university’s bargaining agreement with

Qualifications

  • Requires the use of simple writing, adding, subtracting, whole numbers and the carrying out of instructions.
  • Up to 3 months of effective experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare machines for operations.
  • Report malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Drain and clean machines.
  • Clean and wash soiled dishes, glasses, silverware, trays, conveyor belts and other equipment.
  • Remove, stack and store clean dishes in proper areas.
  • Bleach or remove stains from china and glasses as scheduled.
  • Polish brass, stainless steel, etc.
  • Wash, scour, rinse, dry and properly store all pots and pans used in preparation of meals.
  • Set up serving counters, beverage and condiment stations with appropriate food, beverage, ice and supplies.
  • Replenish serving lines with silver, trays, napkins and dishes as needed.
  • Serve food and/or beverages in posted portion sizes.
  • Turn warmer units on or off before and after each meal.
  • Return all food, dishes, utensils, etc., to kitchen when serving line is closed.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as potato peeler, dishmachine, scrubbing machine, buffer, etc.
  • Clean, sweep, mop, wax and buff, strip, seal and vacuum assigned areas following daily and weekly cleaning schedules.
  • Use ladders and scaffolding in the cleaning of windows, ceilings, walls and light fixtures.
  • Replace light bulbs when necessary.
  • Collect and remove refuse to designated locations.
  • Assist storeroom worker by receiving, checking, storing and delivering incoming food and supplies.
  • Mark containers with date received.
  • Report discrepancies such as short orders to storeroom worker or supervisor.
  • Maintain all work areas in clean and orderly conditions.
  • Make minor adjustments, such as tightening screws, adjusting belts, replacing cotter keys, screws, etc.
  • Report any malfunction or damage to equipment, furnishings or facilities to supervisor.
  • Clear tables and remove dishes to dishroom or conveyor belt.

Job Requirements
  • Requires the use of simple writing, adding, subtracting, whole numbers and the carrying out of instructions

  • Up to 3 months of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Days Off: Saturday, Sunday
