Job description

Working with the Division of Youth Services involves creating a safe, therapeutic, and educational environment for youth in day treatment and residential programs. This is a second-level food service position, responsible for preparing and cooking more complex menu items in a treatment program for youth in custody of the Missouri Division of Youth Services.

The responsibilities of the Food Service Worker include:

  1. Preparing major meals in a large institutional kitchen.
  2. Assisting in meal preparation by measuring ingredients, mixing, boiling, frying, and monitoring cooking temperatures, using proper terminology, measurements, and equipment.
  3. Requisitioning and obtaining supplies and menu items; ensuring quality and quantity; maintaining point of service counts; conducting monthly inventory to verify accuracy.
  4. Developing menus that comply with nutritional guidelines for well-balanced meals.
  5. Completing reports and correspondence accurately and timely.
  6. Maintaining safety and sanitation standards by supervising and participating in cleaning activities.
  7. Ability to lift or carry large portions of food or ingredients.
  8. Properly storing, serving, and rotating food to prevent spoilage and waste.
  9. Working long hours standing in a kitchen environment, possibly in high temperatures.
  10. Supervising and participating in cleaning of kitchen and food service areas.
  11. Working with and supervising youth and helpers in food preparation, safety, and sanitation.
  12. Performing other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills & abilities: Knowledge of standard kitchen procedures and sanitation; ability to prepare complex menu items; proficiency in automated systems, spreadsheets, and databases.

Qualifications include:

  • One or more years of experience as a Food Service Assistant with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System, or
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience. Substitutions may be allowed, such as earned college credit hours (15 credits in related fields can substitute one year of experience at a rate of 30 credits per year).

Note: Lack of post-secondary education will not be the sole reason to deny consideration.
