A Food Service Worker at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities is a crucial member of the M Food Co. team for ensuring the smooth operation of the residential dining halls and retail locations across the Twin Cities campus (East Bank, West Bank, and St. Paul Campus). Food Service Workers play a meaningful role in providing an exceptional dining experience for students, faculty, and staff.

A Food Service Worker is responsible for serving and maintaining food stations, following simple recipes, and assisting cooks with food preparation. The position requires serving customers in a friendly, efficient manner following outlined steps of service, as well as following proper food handling, sanitation, and food storage procedures.

This is a 9‑month appointment, approximately from August to May, with possible reductions in hours during academic breaks.

The position may be designated as essential and is represented by the Teamsters Bargaining Unit.

Location and Work Schedule: This blanket position means work assignments and hours are assigned and changed based on location and operational needs until a position is awarded.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assemble products to serve, including front‑line finish product cooking
  • Serve food and maintain points of service and beverage stations for product and cleanliness
  • Prepare fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Assist cook and senior food service worker as assigned
  • Operate induction burners, Turbochef‑type ovens, grills, fryers, mechanical cutting equipment, mixers, and other manual kitchen utensils including knives
  • Complete food production records
  • Prepare and serve branded products according to brand specifications following specified recipes and portion control
  • Make coffee, espresso‑based drinks, smoothies, etc.
  • Participate in menu presentation and food quality assessment in conjunction with a manager or lead worker
  • Assist in training and assigning tasks to student employees and new food service workers
  • Put away food and supplies
  • Complete daily, weekly and monthly cleaning as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience or education in large food operations or quantity food production. Experience requirements vary by assignment.
  • Ability to accurately perform recipe conversion calculations
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the assignment.
  • Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position

Continued employment is contingent upon passing a Food Safety test during the probation period.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $23.35 - $25.24 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
