The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Food Services Manager position for the Birmingham Area Command located in Birmingham, AL, working full-time.

JOB SUMMARY:

Plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates the day-to-day operations of the Birmingham Area Command’s Center of Hope food services program. Responsibilities include planning menus, purchasing food, maintaining inventory, administering budgets, ensuring compliance with health standards, and supervising kitchen staff, including cooking and serving meals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of food preparation and management principles.
  • Knowledge of proper cooking methods and meal planning techniques.
  • Understanding of dietary and nutritional needs, food storage, and cleaning techniques.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and health regulations for public kitchens.
  • Leadership skills to motivate, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to plan and cook nutritious, tasteful, and safe meals for large groups in a timely manner.
  • Ability to operate and maintain kitchen appliances properly.
  • Skills in ordering supplies economically and maintaining inventory.
  • Ensuring kitchen operations meet health regulations.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
  • Ability to cook, taste, and smell food.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks involving walking, standing, kneeling, or squatting.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is conducted in a kitchen environment with potential exposure to hot stoves/ovens and cold freezers.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Food Handler (SCHD)
  • Jefferson County, AL Health Department

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two-year degree in food services, culinary arts, or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in meal planning, purchasing, cooking for large groups, and supervising staff.
  • Equivalent training and experience considered.
