Position Summary:

The Food Service Assistant (FSA) assists the Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor (FNSS) to ensure breakfast, lunch, and snack services at St. Joseph Academy (SJA) meet national food handling standards, align with SJA's mission and values, and comply with policies, procedures, and regulations. The FSA performs food preparation, sanitation, equipment operation, facility cleaning, and troubleshooting. The FSA also fills in for staff absences.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Experience in food service/kitchen preferred
• Safe Serve Certification required within 6 months
• Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
• Ability to analyze issues, identify options, and implement solutions
• Interest in working with children
• Ability to work cooperatively with team members
• Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
• Good hand-eye coordination
• Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
• Detail-oriented; able to multi-task, prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines

Essential Job Functions/Duties:

• Provide excellent service to children
• Ensure privacy and confidentiality of children at all times
• Model child-centered behaviors for staff
• Use communication methods to address issues and conflicts proactively
• Maintain safety and sanitation standards, cleaning and sanitizing after each assignment
• Operate and secure equipment and supplies safely
• Set up cafeteria for lunch services as needed
• Manage kitchen stock, including dating, rotating, organizing, and cleaning
• Label, date, restock, and store food items properly
• Deep clean kitchen areas and equipment as needed
• Cross-train to prepare food, portion, handle temperatures, replenish service lines, and follow allergy protocols
• Follow national food service standards and policies
• Contribute to department productivity and cost-effectiveness
• Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
• Perform other duties as assigned
