Job summary

NeighborUp is seeking a Food Security Program Coordinator to lead pantry operations, supervise volunteers, and manage donor partnerships. The role focuses on delivering compassionate, dignified pantry services while coordinating with staff and community partners.

The Coordinator will oversee inventory, food drives, and reporting, ensuring adherence to budgets and safety protocols, with opportunities for professional development and growth within a collaborative non-profit environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with customer service, volunteer/inventory management, and basic computer skills.
  • At least 2 years experience in a food pantry.
  • On-site schedule including Saturdays/evenings/weekends.
  • Ability to supervise/coach volunteers and foster teamwork.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and inventory systems.
  • Ability to lift 20–50 lbs. and travel between locations.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with staff and volunteers to support the organization’s mission and plans.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations at the assigned pantry location under the Food Security Program Manager.
  • Recruit, train and schedule daily volunteers to handle donations, manage inventory, and make food purchases within budgets.
  • Monitor pantry inventory to meet dietary needs and ensure cleanliness and order.
  • Follow food-safety, sanitation, and storage procedures.
  • Protect client confidentiality and treat neighbors with dignity and respect.
  • Support communication with neighbors with limited English proficiency using bilingual staff or interpreters as needed.
  • Cultivate donor relationships to increase pantry donations.
  • Coordinate with Marketing Manager to promote pantry needs and events.
  • Coordinate food drives and events with clear donor instructions and staff coverage.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly/annual reports on pantry activity and feedback.
  • Represent NeighborUp at community meetings and participate in organization events.
  • Perform additional duties as requested and supervise interns.

Summary: The Food Security Program Coordinator ensures that pantry services are provided efficiently, with compassion and dignity, and reflect NeighborUp’s commitment to action and neighbors helping neighbors. The Coordinator organizes and supports a team of volunteers, maintains vendor and community partnerships, and serves as a day-to-day point of contact for pantry-related inquiries. This position supports NeighborUp’s mission to equip and empower neighbors with basic essentials and valuable skills for long-term success and reports to the Food Security Program Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the NeighborUp staff and volunteers to support the organization’s mission and strategic plans.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations at the assigned NeighborUp Pantry location under the direction of the Food Security Program Manager.
  • Recruit, train and schedule daily volunteers to handle incoming donations, manage inventory, provide excellent service to neighbors, and make food purchases within established budgets and approval procedures.
  • Monitor and manage pantry inventory to ensure adequate supplies that are culturally appropriate and meet neighbors’ dietary needs. Ensure that the pantry is maintained in an attractive, efficient, clean, and orderly fashion.
  • Follow all applicable food-safety, sanitation, storage, temperature-control, and product-rotation procedures.
  • Protect client confidentiality and help ensure that every neighbor is treated with compassion, dignity, fairness, and respect.
  • Support effective communication with neighbors who have limited English proficiency, including coordinating with bilingual staff, volunteers, or interpreters as appropriate.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors to increase the quantity and quality of pantry donations.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing Manager to promote food pantry needs, and special events.
  • Coordinate food drives and special events, ensuring donors have clear instructions, and staff are available to receive donations upon delivery.
  • Work with the Food Security Program Manager to prepare and distribute reports that provide monthly and annual analyses of food assistance services, pantry activity, and neighbor feedback.
  • Represent NeighborUp at community meetings as appropriate.
  • Support the mission of NeighborUp through participation in organization-wide events.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.
  • Supervises a team of volunteers and interns.

Qualifications Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent with customer service experience, volunteer management and inventory management skills, and the computer skills to manage email, calendar, and inventory systems.
  • At least two years of experience working in a food pantry, preferred.
  • Ability to work a primarily on-site schedule, including occasional Saturdays, evenings, and weekends as needed for pantry operations, food drives, and special events.
  • Ability to supervise and coach volunteers, foster teamwork, and provide feedback.
  • Ability to administer policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with diverse people from diverse backgrounds and foster an inclusive and respectful environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively handle difficult interpersonal situations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn inventory, scheduling, and client-service systems.
  • Ability to physically perform the essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to routinely lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and work with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to travel between NeighborUp locations and attend community events as needed. A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required.
Work Environment/Environmental Condition
  • This is a primarily on-site position based at the Cary Pantry and includes work in office, pantry, food-storage, loading, and occasional outdoor environments.
  • Saturday, evening, and weekend work may be required for pantry operations, food drives, and special events.
