Job summary

Grace Klein Community in the Greater Birmingham area seeks a Preservation Assistant to support the Grace Klein Community Food Preservation Initiative. The role focuses on transforming rescued surplus food into nutritious meals, coordinating with volunteers, chefs, and partners to ensure safe, efficient operations.

You will develop safety protocols, educate the community, and help build a network of donors and community supporters while tracking meals and volunteer hours.

Qualifications

• Experience in kitchen management, culinary arts preferred.
• Familiarity with food safety practices and guidelines.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Experience training or leading volunteers or teams.
• Comfort using digital tools for inventory and scheduling.
• Ability to handle perishable produce safely.
• Passion for food justice and community empowerment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain food safety protocols and inventory systems.
• Coordinate with food rescue teams to schedule deliveries for kitchen use.
• Assist with reducing food waste at multiple levels.
• Collaborate with chefs and partners to create meals from rescued food.
• Recruit and manage kitchen volunteers and interns, ensuring safety.
• Plan batch cooking days and events to utilize rescued food.
