  • Work Schedule: 1st Shift, 10:00am - 6:30pm, Monday - Friday.

Duties
  • Entry-level Food Inspector positions work in slaughter plants, examining food animals in privately-owned meat or poultry plants.
  • Perform duties before and after slaughter to ensure the product is not contaminated.
  • Maintain sanitation procedures.
  • Be a valued member of a team that ensures the product is safe and compliant with Federal laws.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance; may require a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI).
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Submit a resume documenting 52 weeks of specialized experience.
  • Verification through the DHS "E-VERIFY" system upon hiring.
  • May need to complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306).
  • False statements can lead to disciplinary action or removal from Federal service.
  • Mandatory Direct Deposit per Public Law 104-134.
Qualifications

The duties are performed in a hazardous environment. Applicants must:

  • Be physically and medically capable of performing essential functions without being a threat.
  • Have full range of motion for rapid, repetitive movements and working with arms above shoulders.
  • Be able to stand, walk on slippery floors, climb stairs/ladders.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 30 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Have manual dexterity and good vision, including the ability to distinguish shades of color.

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date, including specialized experience or education as detailed below.

For GS-5 level:

One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience after age 16, such as experience in a slaughter or processing plant, meat cutting, quality control, supervision in food/livestock, or responsible food preparation roles. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in sciences.

For GS-7 level:

One year of specialized experience comparable to the next lower grade, involving regulatory food inspection, knowledge of laws, and effective communication skills. Must demonstrate experience in ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection, or processing of meat, poultry, fish, seafood, or eggs.
