Job summary

HRL Laboratories, LLC in California seeks a Focal Plane Engineer to serve as the technical interface for process and product development across the full manufacturing lifecycle.

You will lead FPA manufacturing plans, optimize processes, document results, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, manufacturable solutions. Applicants should have 5+ years of fabrication experience in semiconductor processing and strong data analysis skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of fabrication process experience.
  • Ability to interface with customers and program stakeholders, translating needs into technical requirements.
  • Hands‑on experience with cleanroom fabrication and semiconductor process development.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and translating performance requirements into process metrics.
  • Experience analyzing manufacturing data, including SPC, DOE, and statistical analysis using JMP or similar tools.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate across boundaries and drive scalable improvements.
  • Proven track record in semiconductor processing, microelectronics, or related manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop semiconductor processes and integration schemes to support infrared device architectures and FPA manufacturing.
  • Manage FPA manufacturing plans, ensuring engineering activities are completed and baselined by stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and optimize process routes and drive improvements in cost, schedule, yield, and manufacturability.
  • Document processes, prepare technical reports, review inline metrology, and perform failure analysis.
  • Provide RCCA leadership, troubleshoot issues, and develop recovery plans.
  • Support mask design and tape-out activities by defining and reviewing process design rules.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and external vendors for process transfer and issue resolution.
  • Monitor build progress, WIP, and process configurations to improve efficiency.
