Job summary

HRL Laboratories in California is seeking a Focal Plane Engineer to drive semiconductor process development for infrared device architectures and FPA manufacturing. You will act as the primary technical interface, guiding process improvements and ensuring documentation and data integrity throughout the manufacturing lifecycle.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, lead RCCA activities, and support mask-tapeout and vendor interactions while leveraging data-driven analysis to optimize

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of fabrication process experience.
  • Interface effectively with customers and program stakeholders, translating needs into technical requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with cleanroom fabrication and semiconductor process development.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and translating requirements into process specs and tolerances.
  • Experience with SPC, DOE, and JMP or similar tools for data analysis.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate across functions and drive sustainable improvements.
  • Proven track record delivering products in semiconductor processing or microelectronics.
  • Familiarity with programming environments and databases for data synthesis.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and industrial engineering principles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop semiconductor processes and integration schemes for infrared architectures and FPA manufacturing.
  • Execute and manage FPA manufacturing plans with proper documentation and baselining.
  • Evaluate and optimize process routes to improve cost, yield, and manufacturability.
  • Document processes, prepare reports, and review metrology and data; perform RCA.
  • Provide RCCA leadership and participate in tiger teams for recovery plans.
  • Support mask design and tape-out by defining process design rules and reviews.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors on transfer and issue resolution.
  • Monitor build progress, WIP, and configurations; seek efficiency gains.
  • Apply cost, schedule, and risk management to development activities.
  • Collaborate to develop scalable, portable process solutions; data-driven improvements.
  • Serve as technical interface to customers, translating needs into priorities.
