Position Purpose

The purpose of this position is to keep buildings in clean and orderly condition. Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish.

Essential Job Functions – Principal Accountabilities
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, or squeegees.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, or equipment.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually or with hand trucks.
  • Service, clean, or supply restrooms as needed.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after operating hours or checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.

  • Works in all interior areas of the facility, with controlled heating and lighting. May be exposed to excessive heat in laundry.
  • Stand, traverse, ascend/descend stairs, move/transport carts weighing over 100 pounds, grasp and manipulate tools/equipment to perform cleaning functions. Occasionally move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stretch, bend, stoop, squat, twist, crouch, kneel, and balance to perform cleaning activities and to access equipment and supplies.
  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Converse with others, write legibly, read and comprehend written/verbal information.
  • Lift and carry up to 35 pounds frequently; up to 75 pounds occasionally.
