Job summary

System One seeks a Floodplain and Dam Engineer to join our Virginia team in Chantilly. You will work on floodplain modeling, dam modeling, and permitting across FEMA-regulated zones and state dams in Virginia and Maryland.

The role requires PE licensure (VA preferred) and deep experience with HEC-RAS/HEC-HMS, GIS tools, and project management, coordinating with regulators and clients. Expect a dynamic project load and multi-team collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license (VA required; multi-state preferred).
• 10+ years of experience in water resources engineering.
• Proficiency with HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS modeling.
• Experience with ArcMap or similar GIS tools.

Responsibilities

• Work across floodplain modeling, permitting, floodplain crossing design, dam modeling, and dam permitting.
• Support hydrology and hydraulic modeling for regional projects.
• Develop H&H models using topographic, GIS, and as-built data.
• Prepare floodplain study, CLOMR and LOMR packages.
• Conduct dam breach inundation studies, hazard assessments, and failure analyses.
• Perform floodplain and dam breach modeling and mapping.
• Prepare Emergency Action Plans and support emergency drill presentations.
• Design floodplain crossings (vehicular and pedestrian).
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies to address comments and secure approvals.
• Communicate effectively with internal teams.
