Join us as a Flood Risk Modeler at KatRisk

We leverage innovative technology and expertise to enable clients to make informed decisions, optimize risk management strategies, and safeguard assets against potential catastrophes. Ideal Candidate: A quantitative background in hydrology who enjoys solving complex problems, especially in natural catastrophe and statistical modeling. Experience with large datasets and programming is highly valued. You will contribute to diverse projects, from developing innovative solutions to addressing client queries.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and enhance flood models for various countries and regions.
  • Create programs and processes to improve existing datasets, including precipitation, temperature, streamflow, and digital elevation models (DEMs).
  • Assist in generating simulated and near-real-time high-resolution flood events.
  • Write code collaboratively to analyze complex numeric or geographic datasets.
  • Utilize the KatRisk Software Suite and interpret results for clients and internal studies.
  • Present data analysis findings to team members with diverse scientific and statistical backgrounds.
  • Ensure quality assurance throughout project phases.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • M.S. or PhD in a quantitative or applied scientific field such as atmospheric sciences or hydrology, or a B.S. with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like R, FORTRAN, BASH, Python, C++, or CUDA.
  • Strong skills in data analysis and management.
  • Experience with GIS tools (QGIS, GRASS, GDAL) and scripting languages R and/or Python for GIS file processing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of LINUX environments and command-line operations.
  • Experience with physically based, continental-scale hydrologic models, including their development, calibration, and analysis.
  • Experience analyzing the impacts of climate change on hydrological models.
  • Additional relevant work experience.

Location: Remote, preferably candidates in Austin, TX, or Boston, MA.
