Job summary

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a highly analytical Flood (Water Resources) Engineer to join our Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics team. You will evaluate flood risk for client property portfolios, using vendor models and internal tools, and support underwriting decisions.

Requirements include a Master’s in water resources related field, strong hydrology/hydraulics knowledge, and programming skills in Python, R, MATLAB or SQL.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Hydrology, Hydraulics, or a related discipline.
• Strong understanding of surface water processes, with emphasis on hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, or SQL.
• Solid knowledge of probability and statistics.
• Advanced GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, or equivalent)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and a strong team player.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to flood risk modeling and analytics to support ongoing business needs
• Perform flood risk evaluations using vendor models and internal tools
• Communicate flood risk modeling concepts and results to underwriters to guide underwriting decisions
• Collaborate with the team to integrate BHSI’s view of risk into catastrophe modeling tools and platforms
• Support all aspects of natural catastrophe analytics
