Responsibilities

• Keeps buildings and premises neat and clean at all times.
• Cleans school per planned cleaning program and assignments.
• Regulates heat and ventilation to maintain comfortable temperatures and energy efficiency.
• Shovels, plows, and sands walks, parking lots, driveways, and steps as needed.
• Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
• Checks exits and panic bolts during occupancy hours.
• Keeps grounds free from rubbish and performs basic yard-keeping tasks.
• Reports major repairs promptly and ensures operation of district property during emergencies.
• Performs other maintenance duties as assigned.
• Assists with filling staffing vacancies and covering absences across facilities.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Floater Custodian performs all responsibilities necessary to provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient environment in which to learn, work, and develop. This position provides custodial coverage across all Newport Public Schools facilities and is responsible for filling staffing vacancies, covering absences, and assisting with custodial operations as assigned.

The Floater Custodian must maintain flexible availability to work any assigned shift at any District building based on operational needs. Reliable personal transportation is required, as the employee must be able to travel between District facilities as needed.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
• Must have knowledge of general maintenance and cleaning procedures.
• Must be reliable.
• Must be able to cooperate with administrators, teachers, and students.
• Must be able to make minor adjustments and/or repairs to building and equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by educational and work-related experiences, previous employment and the interview process.
• Any such alternatives to the above qualifications as the committee deems acceptable and appropriate, provided that the above qualifications cannot be met.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Cleans school in accordance with the planned cleaning program. Assignment of sections will be made by the Plant Engineer and/or Principal.
• Regulates heat and ventilation to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Shovels, plows, and sands walks, parking lots, driveways, and steps when needed.
• Moves furniture or equipment within the building, as required for various activities and as directed.
• Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
• Performs such yard-keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
• Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
• Assumes responsibility for building security during work shifts.
• Ensures the operation of all Newport School Department property in case of all emergency conditions.
• Reports major repairs needed promptly to the Plant Engineer and/ or Principal.
• Reports immediately to the Plant Engineer and/ or Principal any damage to school property.
• Performs other maintenance duties as assigned by the Plant Engineer and/ or Principal.

PHYSICAL/ MENTAL REQUIREMENTS :

Walking, climbing, stooping, reaching, pushing, talking, pulling, crawling, crouching, lifting (50 pound minimum), handling, hearing, grasping, standing, kneeling, carrying, seeing, balancing and turning.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work inside/outside, adequate lighting/ventilation, work with/around others and work alone.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

In accordance with the Local 841 contract-

• Custodian Pay Grade 3. 40 hours per week. ½ hour unpaid lunch.
• 12 month position
